Senator Harri Anne Smith Addresses Wetumpka Lions
(WETUMPKA, ALABAMA)--State Senator Harri Anne Smith (R-Slocomb), Republican candidate for Congress in the Second District of Alabama, told the Wetumpka Lions Club Monday she was prepared for the challenge of serving in Washington. She was the invited guest speaker for Monday's meeting and was introduced by State Representative Barry Mask (R-Redland).
“During my ten years in the Alabama State Senate, I have fought against raising taxes, promoted reform of the civil justice system and worked for expanding economic development and those principles will guide me when I am elected to Congress,” she said.
"We face enormous challenges in national security, immigration reform, protecting social security, improving transportation and keeping our military bases viable," Smith said. "You can put me to the test, and I won't let you down."
Senator Smith was born and grew up in Slocomb, Alabama where she served on the Slocomb City Council and as Mayor. As Mayor of Slocomb she served as President of the Second Congressional District League of Municipalities, and was a member of the Board of the Southeast Regional Development Council, the State of Alabama Agribusiness Council, and the City of Slocomb Planning and Development Committee.
She was elected to the Alabama State Senate in 1998 and re-elected in 2002 and 2006 and was rated as the Most Conservative Member of the Senate in 2004. She was also awarded the National Federation of Small Business “Guardian of Small Business” award for 2002 through 2006.
The Second Congressional District of Alabama is made up of sixteen counties, including all of the Wiregrass, part of Montgomery and all of Elmore and Autauga Counties. It is currently represented by Congressman Terry Everett (R) who recently announced his retirement.
