Alabama State Senator Harri Anne Smith Seeks 2nd Congressional District Seat
MONTGOMERY - State Sen. Harri Anne Smith, R-Slocomb, is trying to do what few women have ever done: represent Alabama in Congress.
Smith, 45, announced Thursday she is running for the 2nd Congressional District seat held since 1993 by Rep. Terry Everett, R-Rehobeth, who is not seeking re-election next year.
Smith stressed her qualifications while making her announcement on the steps of the State House. She is executive vice president of Slocomb National Bank. She was elected mayor of Slocomb in 1996, elected to the state Senate in 1998 and re-elected in 2002 and 2006.
On the issue of few women representing Alabama in Congress, Smith said: "I'll be the most qualified individual in this campaign," and "What's a big deal is electing the most qualified person." ...
"We've never had a woman elected (to Congress) apart from her relation to a man," said William Stewart, a political science professor at the University of Alabama. "That's why Harri Anne Smith's candidacy is especially interesting. Alabama has just never had a woman make a congressional career."...
Natalie Davis, a political science professor at Birmingham-Southern College, said Smith has a reputation of being a skilled organizer and money-raiser. "I think she'll be formidable," Davis said. ...
The 2nd District covers much of southeast Alabama, including Dothan, Enterprise and Troy. It also includes Autauga and Elmore counties and part of northwest Montgomery County.
