Bright Lags in Faising Funds for 2nd District Race

WASHINGTON -- Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright lagged behind several Republican candidates in fundraising for the race to succeed retiring GOP Rep. Terry Everett in southeastern Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, according to the latest financial reports.

Four Republicans running for the seat reported more spending or fundraising than Bright:

• State Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb led the way after raising $250,675, with $139,248 in the bank after expenses.

• Montgomery broadcasting executive David Woods reported raising $99,482 and taking a loan of $250,000, for a total cash on hand of $308,797 after expenses.

• State Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery raised $61,301, leaving him with $276,562 -- much of it money he earlier donated to himself.

• Dothan oral surgeon Craig Schmidtke reported raising $242,725, but nearly all of it came from a donation to himself. Schmidtke had $13,280 remaining after expenses.

Fundraising -- while not always a reliable indicator of elector success -- is a signal of a candidate's strength among party activists.

Congressional campaigns in Alabama frequently top the $1 million mark.

No other challengers in Alabama's races reported raising significant money.
